Over the past year, the series Mon Ami Gil has introduced us to a man of few words who has much to say. Our friend Gil shared his life and inspired us in many ways. He enjoyed his professional photo shoot and encouraged us to offer the same opportunity to other persons with intellectual disabilities through a photo contest.

Tiana from British Colombia was the first to share the results of her photo session with us. She was thrilled with the experience, as related in the article “Presenting… Tiana!

Tiana really liked Gil’s slideshow and she wondered what he would think of her photos. So, naturally, we went to the man himself to get his reaction as he watched Tiana’s slideshow. It’s safe to say that Gil approved. We’re delighted that this has been a positive experience and that they have made this connection through mutual appreciation.

We’re grateful that we followed Gil’s lead and gave others a chance to step in front of the camera. And that Tiana took the risk to share herself with us. Perhaps, Gil is inviting each of us to take the risk to be seen and to support others to do the same. Imagine a world where every person has the opportunity to shine.

When a Man Becomes a Butterfly

Richard had a disability. A childhood fall from a horse had long-term repercussions. Whenever he walked, he leaned slightly to the side, as though he were always about to gather flowers along his path. As it happened, Richard possessed an intimate understanding of flowers and plants, calling each one of them by name. He knew their gifts and fragility, as well as how to take care of them.
