On March 27 and 28, 2019, the Vanier Institute of the Family held the Families in Canada Conference 2019 (#FAM2019) – a pan-Canadian conference based in Ottawa with seven simultaneous satellite events co-hosted by university partners across the country.

More than just a conference, this unique and inclusive series of events brought together people with lived experience and diverse leaders who study, serve and support families for two days of research, knowledge-sharing, and engaging conversation focused on the conference theme – THINK BIG: How can we use “Big Data” to inform and inspire big ideas to optimize family well-being in Canada? – to create a Canadian Family Well-Being Index, Canadian Family Researchers Network, Social Policy Monitor and more.

Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and Anil Arora, Canada’s Chief Statistician, delivered remarks at the National Conference in Ottawa. Information, insights and inspiration about the diversity of families and complexity of family life were explored by more than 100 diverse panellists, presenters and performers from Canada, US, UK and Australia.

With presenters and delegates from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and sectors, the Families in Canada Conference 2019 provided many opportunities for fresh perspectives and story ideas, as well as engaging interviews that will be of interest to all families.
