BROKEN: Institutions, Families, and the Construction Intellectual Disability
Posted 2019-02-06
L’Arche Canada is pleased to announce the publication of BROKEN: Institutions, Families, and the Construction Intellectual Disability by Madeline Burghardt, professor of Disability Studies at Kings College, University of Western Ontario. Madeline is a long-time member and former assistant of L’Arche Toronto and L’Arche Daybreak.
In her research, Madeline listened deeply to institutional survivors, siblings, and parents to inform this important work on the impact on individuals and their families when society marginalizes people by defining their difference as a reason to exclude them.

A book launch will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019, 7:00-9:00 pm at Dora Keogh Irish Pub, 141 Danforth Avenue, Toronto.
“Burghardt illuminates the vastly divergent perspectives of those who experienced institutionalization, and the role of power in shaping these experiences, ultimately finding that those with the least power suffered the most extensive negative effects and experienced institutionalization as an oppressive force. A thorough and well-developed study.” – Allison Carey, Shippensburg University
“This is an excellent book on an important topic. The writing is clear and approachable, the research is comprehensive and the analysis insightful. Burghardt presents a compelling narrative, bringing in broader social contexts and themes.” – Deborah Stienstra, University of Guelph
