L’Arche Cape Breton
L’Arche Cape Breton was founded in 1983 when Tom and Anne Gunn invited Janet Moore to come and live with their family. Today, we are a community of approximately 50 people. We have six houses, an apartment, a chapel, a hermitage, a house of welcome and retreat, a small garden, and a full work program called L’Arche Works, including a used clothing store, a workshop, a day program, and an integrated work placement program with the local businesses.
L’Arche Cape Breton is an ecumenical, Christian community. We welcome people of all religious backgrounds, and those with no religious tradition. We often say that it is not important to be religious to be an assistant at L’Arche Cape Breton. It is only important to be open to the beliefs and traditions of others. In fact, many assistants rediscover their faith in the simple day-to-day life at L’Arche.
L’Arche Cape Breton is perhaps best known for its rural setting and its simple lifestyle. We seek to live simply, in solidarity with those with disabilities, and with unemployed and marginalized people everywhere. We live counter-culturally, recognizing the importance of relationships over the acquiring of material possessions and power.
